An Alabama woman is in custody after authorities said she neglected her two teenage children with autism, leading to the death of one of them.
Authorities arrested 39-year-old Amanda Morgan on Tuesday following an investigation into her child’s death. According to local Fox affiliate WALA, Morgan has two teenage children with autism, ages 14 and 16. On Oct. 8, 2025, officers with the Mobile Police Department responded to her home and found her 14-year-old son dead. Officers also reportedly observed signs of neglect inside the home.
Months later, prosecutors charged Morgan with her son’s murder and aggravated child abuse.
Morgan appeared in court Wednesday for a bond hearing, where witnesses described the condition of her home when authorities discovered her son’s body last fall, according to local CBS affiliate WKRG. Testimony indicated that Morgan had left both teenagers home alone overnight before her son was found. A witness also said Morgan would leave the teens alone for “extended periods of time.”
An autopsy report stated that the 14-year-old boy had a blanket wrapped around his neck, and officials ruled his death as “accidental strangulation.” Testimony also revealed that the home was in poor condition, with no air conditioning or running water, and was infested with insects and human waste.
WKRG reported that the 16-year-old was hospitalized for malnutrition. During the bond hearing, the court ordered Morgan to have no contact with her surviving child.
A judge set Morgan’s bond at $40,000 for the aggravated abuse charge and $400,000 for the murder charge. She remains in custody at the Mobile County Metro Jail and is scheduled for arraignment on March 24.
