LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Nearly three years after a Kentucky State Police trooper assaulted a suspect, the agency has released body camera footage of the incident.
The incident occurred on July 28, 2023, in Carroll County. According to KSP, former trooper Hayden Killborne was involved in a multi-county chase of a suspect believed to be armed and dangerous and accused of driving a stolen vehicle.
The pursuit stretched across four counties before troopers used a tire deflation device to stop the vehicle.
As the suspect ran on foot, officers shouted commands, with body camera footage showing troopers repeatedly ordering him to show his hands and get on the ground.
“Show me your hands! I will kill you. Show me your hands. You are dead when I catch you. Show me your hands now,” an officer can be heard yelling.
When troopers caught up with the suspect, they continued issuing commands.
“Give me your hands. Show me your hands, show me your hands. Put your hands behind your back. I will kill you,” the trooper said.
Court documents state that after being taken into custody, the suspect suffered facial bruising, broken teeth, and cuts that required stitches.
Five days after the incident, KSP moved to terminate Killborne. He appealed the decision and instead received a six-month unpaid suspension while the agency launched a criminal investigation.
Killborne was later arrested and pleaded guilty to assault and terroristic threatening charges. He resigned in January.
KSP Commissioner Phillip Burnett Jr. said the trooper’s actions were “unacceptable” and “out of line.”
“This trooper violated the sacred duty of policing,” Burnett said.
