Parents were notified around 10 a.m. Monday that a staff member had briefly stored a personal handgun in a locked school closet but could not confirm whether it had been taken home. Oldham County Police began searching the campus.

By midday, authorities including OCPD, ATF and K-9 units conducted a sweep of the K–5 school while students continued normal activities, and the school was not placed on lockdown.

Later communication confirmed the staff member found the weapon at home. Officials said the situation resulted from “human error,” and no threats were made toward students or staff.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A staff member’s misplaced handgun prompted a search by local police and federal agents Monday at Camden Station Elementary School in Oldham County, according to messages sent to parents.

In a message to families shortly after 10 a.m. Monday, Principal Dana Corson said a staff member reported they had briefly stored a personal handgun in a locked closet at the school but could not confirm whether it had been taken home.

School officials and the Oldham County Police Department searched common areas of the building, but the weapon was not immediately found.

Later Monday, parents received another update stating the building had been fully cleared after a thorough search by the Oldham County Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, including K-9 units.

Officials said the staff member later located the handgun at their home.

School leaders said no threats were made toward students or staff and described the situation as “human error.” The staff member involved reported the misplacement themselves, according to the school’s statement.

The school was not placed on lockdown during the search, and students continued their regular schedule.

School officials said the safety of students and staff remains their top priority, and Camden Station Elementary will continue working to maintain a secure environment.
