‘When I saw those three zeros, I froze’

The Kentucky Lottery launched Hot Money Multiplier at retailers across the state in January.

HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. (WBKO) – A Hopkinsville woman’s quick stop for groceries turned into a life-changing experience.

The winner, who chose to remain anonymous, said she decided to shop at a different store instead of her usual location. During the visit, she bought a $20 Kentucky Lottery Hot Money Multiplier scratch-off ticket.

“I had a $20 ticket to cash in and thought, ‘Oh, forget it, I’ll grab one while I’m here,’” she said in a release.

While scratching the ticket, she matched the number 31 in the first row and revealed the $500,000 top prize directly beneath it.

“When I saw those three zeros, I froze. I couldn’t breathe. I was shaking, I couldn’t drive. I think I may have passed out,” she said in the release.

She and her husband later traveled to Kentucky Lottery headquarters in Louisville to claim the prize. After taxes, she received $362,500.

Although she plans to keep working, she told lottery officials the winnings will provide financial stability for her family.

“I like to work and I’m able,” she said in the release. “This money gives me breathing room. I’ll help my daughter and finally buy a new car – one I can pick out myself.”

This marks her first major win. The longtime lottery player previously won a $225,000 Cash Ball top prize in 2017.

Kroger will receive a $5,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.

The Kentucky Lottery launched the Hot Money Multiplier game at retailers across the state in January. One $500,000 top prize and eight $10,000 prizes remain available.
