LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – The man accused of causing a crash that killed a University of Kentucky student accepted a plea deal on Monday, March 9.

Joseph Siami had been indicted on multiple charges, including driving under the influence, in connection with the November 2021 crash that killed Chase Lawson.

Under the plea agreement, Siami’s murder charge was reduced to manslaughter with a 10-year prison sentence. Two first-degree assault charges were reduced to second-degree assault, each carrying a five-year sentence.

Siami also faced charges of criminal mischief, which carried a five-year sentence, and operating a vehicle under the influence, which carried a 30-day sentence.

The manslaughter and assault sentences will run consecutively for a total of 20 years, while the other sentences will run concurrently.

The plea agreement resolves the case but requires Siami to remain in custody until his formal sentencing hearing.
