Officers were dispatched around 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 26, to an active investigation in the 500 block of West Ormsby Avenue.

At the scene, police discovered a man inside a home whom they described as “obviously deceased.”

Authorities took Gerlach into custody and charged him with murder, abuse of a corpse and torture of a dog. After being released from the hospital, he was transferred to LMDC custody.

According to the arrest report, officers found Gerlach after he jumped from a fourth-floor apartment. When they searched the apartment he jumped from, they discovered a dead Chihuahua in the sink and later found the dead man hidden behind a mattress in a closet.

Gerlach admitted to stabbing the man and moving the body to “get it out of the way.” He also admitted to stabbing and drowning the dog.

The judge set Gerlach’s bond at $1 million full cash and appointed a public defender. During the hearing, the defender requested a lower bond, but the judge denied the request. If Gerlach posts bond, he will be placed under home incarceration and ordered to have no contact with the victim’s family or with animals.
