ASHLAND, Ky. — A Louisville man plans to plead guilty to a reduced federal charge following his arrest in Magoffin County on drug-related allegations.

Authorities pulled over 36-year-old Robert Earl Pilgrim in Magoffin County in August 2023 and discovered a large quantity of methamphetamine in his possession. A federal grand jury later indicted him in 2024 on a charge of possessing more than 500 grams of meth with the intent to distribute.

According to a signed plea agreement filed in the case, Pilgrim and federal prosecutors agreed that he will plead guilty to a lesser charge of possessing more than 50 grams of meth with intent to distribute. The key distinction between the two charges lies in the potential penalties: the original charge carries a maximum sentence of life in prison, while the reduced charge has a maximum of 40 years.

A judge scheduled a hearing for Feb. 18 in Lexington, where Pilgrim is expected to formally enter his guilty plea.
