The trial has begun for a Louisville mother accused of admitting to shooting and killing her 10-year-old son in 2021.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – Jury selection and testimony are underway in the case of a Louisville mother who police say confessed to shooting and killing her 10-year-old son in 2021.

Prosecutors revealed disturbing details in court Tuesday, alleging that Kaitlyn Higgins attempted to perform an exorcism on her son before killing him.

According to prosecutors, the crime occurred in April 2021 at a home on Algonquin Parkway.

Warning: The details of this case are disturbing.

Police said they received a call the day of the killing from someone who reported seeing Higgins with a gun and a boy wrapped in a blanket.

Officers later found 10-year-old Kyan Higgins Jr. dead inside the trunk of her car.

Investigators said his mother told police she tried to cut out his tongue. Prosecutors also alleged she was high on methamphetamine when she taped the boy to a chair, punched him and stabbed him.

“We’re not asking you to make up your mind. We’re only asking that you keep an open mind and listen to all the evidence before deciding what this case is really about and why this happened,” attorneys told the jury.

The case has prompted a 2025 Kentucky bill that seeks to train animal control officers to recognize signs of child abuse and neglect.

Records show Metro Animal Services had cited Kyan’s mother for animal neglect before the child’s death.
