A Northern Kentucky father is facing multiple felony charges after police say he pulled a gun in an elementary school parking lot during a dispute over his son’s playing time in a basketball game.
Steven Hamblin, 28, was charged with seven counts of wanton endangerment, unlawful possession of a handgun on school property, endangering the welfare of a minor, and tampering with physical evidence.
Police were called Saturday afternoon to Walton-Verona Elementary School after reports of a man with a gun. When officers arrived, a witness provided video footage recorded in the parking lot showing Hamblin stepping from the side of a minivan, pulling out a black handgun, and pointing it toward a group of seven people.
Hamblin left the scene before police arrived.
Officers later spoke with the child’s basketball coach, who said Hamblin confronted him in the parking lot after the game about his son’s lack of playing time, according to a police citation.
After an argument, the coach admitted to touching Hamblin when Hamblin got in his face. Police said a small scuffle followed before the two separated. Hamblin then went to the side of his vehicle and retrieved a handgun.
The coach told police that Hamblin repeatedly said he was “going to shoot people” while holding the gun.
Hamblin was later located and arrested at his home in Kenton County. He told police he was acting in defense of his family.
Hamblin made his first court appearance Monday, where a judge set his bond at $200,000 cash.
Court records show Hamblin has a prior misdemeanor criminal history, including guilty pleas for public intoxication, unlawful transaction with a minor, and receiving stolen property.
No charges were filed against the basketball coach.
