Kentucky — A Kentucky man has been arrested in connection with the death of his spouse, J. Aljic, after authorities responding to a vehicle fire early last week discovered human remains inside the car, according to law enforcement. The 31-year-old suspect, Salko, faces charges of murder, tampering with physical evidence, and abuse of a corpse. A second suspect, 44-year-old Shelly, was also arrested and charged with tampering with physical evidence and abuse of a corpse for her alleged involvement.
The Sheriff’s Office received a call reporting a vehicle on fire. Firefighters arrived to find the sedan fully engulfed in flames. After the fire was extinguished, deputies discovered a body on the passenger-side floorboard. The state medical examiner’s office reported no soot in the victim’s lungs, indicating she was already dead before the fire was set. Investigators later determined the vehicle had been intentionally ignited.
Authorities identified the victim as 31-year-old J. Aljic, who had recently moved from Missouri, where a protective order had previously been filed against her spouse, according to court testimony. Investigators confirmed the burned vehicle was registered to the victim and used license plate reader data to track its movements before the fire.
Deputies later executed a search warrant at the suspect’s home. Shelly, described as the suspect’s brother’s girlfriend, answered the door and initially denied the man was inside. Officers later found him hiding in the residence and took him into custody. During early questioning, he denied knowing where the victim was and claimed he had last seen her in November.
While searching the home, investigators found a bag of clothing hidden in a kitchen cabinet that matched what the suspect appeared to be wearing in surveillance footage taken before the vehicle fire. Deputies also discovered three pillows in a washing machine that appeared to be stained with blood.
Shelly later told detectives she witnessed a violent altercation between the suspect and the victim. She reported hearing him repeatedly strike the woman and said the victim’s body was left on the kitchen floor for three days. During that time, the suspect allegedly told the couple’s three children their mother was “sleeping,” and no attempt was made to seek medical help or contact authorities.
According to Shelly, she remained in the home because of her own domestic issues and said she feared for her life after the alleged killing. She told investigators she later obtained gasoline and accompanied the suspect as they drove the victim’s body in the car to a rural area. Court documents state the suspect first attempted to push the vehicle off a cliff but failed. He then allegedly poured gasoline on the car and ignited it using a rag.
The suspect was transported to police headquarters for further questioning. A detective testified that he admitted striking the victim during an argument and said she stopped breathing afterward. He claimed that leaving the body in the home and not calling 911 was Shelly’s idea and alleged she suggested buying gasoline and setting the car on fire. He also claimed the victim was alive when the fire was started, a statement that conflicts with the medical examiner’s findings.
Kentucky authorities have not yet released a final determination of the exact cause of death, as forensic experts continue examining the remains. The couple’s three children, who were in the home at the time of the incident, have been placed with the victim’s family in Missouri and are expected to be interviewed as part of the investigation.
The suspect remains in the county regional jail on a $1 million cash bond. Shelly is also being held on a $50,000 bond. The case has been submitted to a grand jury for possible indictment, and the investigation remains ongoing.
