Jordan Morgan’s family returned to court Monday, sitting just feet away from Shannon Gilday, the man prosecutors say shot and killed Morgan during a 2022 home invasion at her father’s mansion.

While the trial date is set, the location remains undecided. Both prosecutors and the defense indicated that moving the trial to Shelby County, about an hour away, would be acceptable. The defense argued Gilday cannot receive a fair trial in Madison County due to widespread publicity. The judge is expected to rule on the matter by the end of the week.

Family friends note that moving trials ensures an unbiased jury and helps prevent post-conviction issues. Jordan Morgan’s loved ones have waited four years for the trial and say being in the courtroom with Gilday is extremely difficult.

“It’s awful — it’s the worst thing I have to do. I hate it and I still come and we come every single time,” said family friend Mica Nicole. “We have to sit within arm’s length of the man who has confessed to murdering our friend.”

If convicted, Gilday could face the death penalty. He is scheduled to return to court on March 20 for another hearing ahead of the May trial.
