BENTON — A federal judge in southern Illinois has sentenced a Kentucky man to 15 years in prison for possessing more than 150 grams of methamphetamine and a firearm as a convicted felon.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, 45-year-old James W. Towery of Salem, Kentucky, pleaded guilty to one count of possession with intent to distribute meth and one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Court records show law enforcement officers conducted a traffic stop on Towery’s vehicle on March 11, 2024, in Massac County. During the stop, officers found him in possession of 150.4 grams of actual methamphetamine and a .38-caliber handgun.
Officials said Towery had multiple prior felony convictions, which made it illegal for him to possess a firearm.
The investigation involved the Illinois State Police, Kentucky State Police, the Drug Enforcement Administration, Homeland Security Investigations, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and local law enforcement agencies. Assistant U.S. Attorney David Sanders prosecuted the case.
