LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) — A Louisville man was arrested early Thursday morning after police say he robbed a DoorDash driver at gunpoint, stealing more than $126 worth of Papa John’s pizzas.

Police arrested Jorein Thomas just before 2 a.m. on Jan. 8. He is charged with first-degree robbery and tampering with physical evidence.

According to an arrest report, officers responded to an armed robbery call in the 9800 block of Turnpike View Drive. A woman told police she was making a DoorDash delivery when a man came around the side of the house, pointed a gun at her, and ordered her to drop the pizza.

After she dropped the delivery bag, the suspect grabbed it and ran. Officers later reviewed Ring doorbell video from the home, which police say confirmed the driver’s account.

While searching the area, officers spotted Thomas bent over in the backseat of a vehicle. Police said they saw multiple Papa John’s pizza boxes next to him and a handgun on the backseat floorboard when he exited the car.

After being detained and read his Miranda rights, Thomas allegedly admitted he hid near the delivery location, showed the driver a gun, and demanded the pizza. Police say he told them, “At least a woman was not shot,” and added that “a young, Black man had to do what he had to do to eat.”

Officers later found the DoorDash delivery bags discarded in a dumpster on Lana Court.

Thomas appeared in court Friday morning.
