KENTUCKY — Authorities arrested a Virginia woman late this month after alleging she trafficked methamphetamine in Pike County.
The Pike County Sheriff’s Office said deputies arrested Cherish Dawn Conaway, 19, of Cedar Bluff, on Dec. 27 following a traffic stop at a DUI safety checkpoint.
According to deputies, officers were conducting the checkpoint on U.S. Route 319 in the Hardy community when Conaway’s vehicle approached. Deputies reported smelling marijuana coming from inside the vehicle and directed Conaway to pull to the side. Officers said Conaway had glassy eyes and told them she had smoked marijuana about six hours earlier.
During a search of the vehicle, deputies said they found a glass pipe commonly used to smoke methamphetamine. Officers also reported finding a small bag believed to contain methamphetamine under the driver’s seat and another bag with a suspected methamphetamine substance inside the glove box.
Police said Conaway admitted the drugs belonged to her. Deputies took her to the Pike County Detention Center and charged her with first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance, first offense, involving less than two grams of methamphetamine; first-degree possession of a controlled substance, first offense; and possession of drug paraphernalia.
The case remains under investigation.
