MIAMI, Fla. — The family of Dr. Helen Garay Sanchez, a 32-year-old anesthesiologist, has broken their silence following the discovery of her naked body inside a Dollar Tree freezer in Miami.
Sanchez, originally from Nicaragua, had been in Miami since December 4. Employees found her body in the store’s walk-in freezer around 8 a.m. on Sunday, December 14, and called emergency services.
For the first time since her death, her family expressed frustration over the lack of answers. “We’re not getting any answers,” her cousin Daniela Cortez told The New York Post. “Even the family has a lot of questions. We don’t know how this happened either.”
Miami police said foul play is not suspected, though the investigation is ongoing. Surveillance footage shows Sanchez entering the walk-in freezer on the evening of December 13, just before the store closed at 10 p.m. She was discovered the following morning by an employee.
The medical examiner’s report is still pending, with the cause of death currently listed as “undetermined” or “unclassified.” Investigators noted that hypothermia, which can cause paradoxical undressing, may have contributed.
Sanchez’s two children remain in Nicaragua with her family. They remember her as a loving mother whose children “were the center of her world,” praising her “strength, warmth, and unwavering love.”
Neighbors expressed shock at the incident. “I’m totally devastated,” one resident told CBS News. “I can’t believe in the Dollar Tree you’d find a dead body.”
A Dollar Tree spokesperson said the company is cooperating fully with authorities. A GoFundMe page to help return Sanchez’s body home has raised over $18,300.
