FRANKFORT, Ky. (WDRB) — Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman announced that his office’s Violent Crime Reduction Team has secured a conviction and obtained two new felony indictments in Jefferson County.

The Violent Crime Reduction Team, based in downtown Louisville, focuses on gun-related crimes and non-fatal shootings, staffed with three prosecutors and a detective.

Conviction

Cody Cahill, 35, pleaded guilty on September 30 in Jefferson Circuit Court to possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, a Class C felony. Police found him with a handgun in the parking lot of an unlocked storage facility during a security check. Cahill, who has prior felony convictions, is scheduled for sentencing on November 17 and faces five years in prison. The case was investigated by the St. Matthews Police Department.

Felony Indictments

A Jefferson County grand jury also indicted two men in unrelated cases:

  • Dorian Lovett, 19, was indicted for first-degree assault, complicity, and first-degree wanton endangerment in connection with a non-fatal shooting near Fairdale on May 4, 2025. Lovett was arrested in July by the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD).

  • Stephen Brandon Barker, 38, was indicted for possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, fleeing or evading police in the third degree, and two traffic violations. His case was investigated by University of Louisville Police.

Attorney General Coleman launched the Violent Crime Reduction Team in October 2024 in collaboration with Louisville leaders to combat violent crime in the city. The team prosecutes non-fatal shootings and convicted felons illegally possessing handguns, aiming to reduce gun violence in the area.
