LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Court records show that former Scott County Sheriff Kenneth Hughbanks plans to plead guilty to tax evasion.
Hughbanks was arrested in April by Indiana State Police. Special Prosecutor Ric Hertel charged him with filing false tax returns for three years, failing to report income from property sales, and taking money from a relative’s bank account who has dementia.
A sentencing date has not been set. Hughbanks faces up to two and a half years in prison.
Hughbanks’ tax records came under investigation as part of the broader probe into former Clark County Sheriff Jamey Noel. Hughbanks previously worked for Noel at the Clark County Sheriff’s Office before taking the Scott County position.
Investigators also found payments from Clark County’s Commissary fund to Hughbanks’ company with little detail or proof of work. Prosecutors did not charge him for those payments, but he has been ordered, along with Noel, to repay the funds following an audit by the Indiana State Board of Accounts.
Messages to Hughbanks’ lawyer, Patrick Renn, and Special Prosecutor Ric Hertel were not immediately returned.
