Four people were hospitalized with critical injuries following an crash in Northern Kentucky.
It occurred shortly after 5 p.m. on the southbound lanes of Dixie Highway at Winding Way in Kenton County.
According to authorities, a witness first reported the crash to deputies. When emergency responders arrived at the scene, they discovered three cars involved in the incident. The passengers of two vehicles were found to be unharmed, while four people in a third vehicle were sent to UC Medical Center with significant injuries.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet stated at the time that all southbound lanes of Dixie Highway (U.S. 25) were closed from the Interstate 275 eastbound off-ramp at 7.47 miles to Winding Way at 7.34 miles, a distance of 0.13 miles.
Brenda Reece, a nearby resident, says the speed limit does not apply on Dixie Highway, but when she arrived home around 5:00 PM, traffic was bumper to bumper.
Ten minutes later, Reece and her husband heard two big bangs from the outside.
“We hear accidents here all the time, but this sounded like a bomb went off, a literal bomb,” Reece replied. “I hurried out and saw two men lying in the road. I went to one and noticed another one laying in the road… The other two had to be taken out with the jaws of life.
Several automobiles were totaled, and a black Jeep was nearly unrecognizable, wrapped around a traffic post.
Reece claims she spent an hour with the victims, who fled the scene still breathing and grateful for their lives.
“He wasn’t responsive at first,” Reece explained. “Then I touched him, and I realized he was breathing. Then he began moaning, and I simply advised him to lay still, since aid was on the way.”
The road remained stopped for several hours while authorities examined the event.
