An Alabama homicide suspect was detained in Perry County after fleeing into the woods and engaging in a physical struggle with Sheriff Jacob Garner, authorities announced.
According to WJTV News in Jackson, the Perry County Sheriff’s Office received a tip on September 21, 2026, about a suspicious man who was sleeping at a home in Buck Creek under an alias. When deputies arrived, the suspect, identified as 68-year-old Comer McWaters, escaped into surrounding woods, avoiding capture for the whole day.
Later that evening, Sheriff Garner noticed McWaters emerge from the tree line and onto a private drive near Garner’s mother’s house. When Garner approached, McWaters turned violent, carrying two big knives. Following a brief fight, Garner disarmed McWaters and took him into jail with no major injuries recorded.
Following his arrest, law officials verified that McWaters was wanted by the Alabama Bureau of Investigation and the Alabama Attorney General’s Office for the killing of an Alabama woman.
McWaters is now being jailed without bond in Perry County for extradition to Alabama.
