The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department announced that an arrest has been made in connection with a fatal shooting that happened on Indianapolis’ east side earlier this month.
According to an IMPD social media post, homicide detectives and the department’s violent crimes section arrested a 20-year-old man in connection with the deadly shooting on Sept. 5 in the 9700 block of East 21st Street.
The department did not identify the person taken into custody in the post. However, a police report identified him as Landon Snorten-Martin, a 20-year-old Indianapolis resident.
According to prior reports, officers responded to the 9700 block of East 21st Street around 6:08 a.m. on September 5. Officers found 38-year-old Johnny Edward Johnson Jr. inside a residence with a gunshot wound.
Johnson was pronounced deceased on the scene. The shooting was first classified as a “justifiable homicide” but was later changed to “homicide/murder.”
“Detectives are still piecing together the evidence to determine the exact circumstances and are working with the MCPO on any applicable charges,” an IMPD representative stated at the time. “Therefore, this has not been classified as a justifiable homicide.”
According to court documents, Snorten-Martin was identified as the culprit on the scene and surrendered to uniformed officers. A handgun was found in the house, as well as a fired cartridge case.
According to the documents, the gunshot was the result of a reported altercation in the home between several people, including Johnson and Snorten-Martin.
Snorten-Martin allegedly informed police that Johnson had a handgun and was agitated following a reported confrontation. Johnson initially gave Snorten-Martin the gun in order to remove it from the scene of the disturbance.
Snorten-Martin alleged Johnson hit a person in the house, who was a family member of hers. According to the records, Snorten-Martin then “blacked out” and shot Johnson once “with the intent to shoot him in the leg or something’ but shot him in the chest.”
Snorten-Martin allegedly departed the home on foot after the purported shooting, leaving the gun on the floor. According to the records, he informed investigators that he should not have shot Johnson and instead “taken care of things with his hands.”
According to the latest IMPD update, a murder warrant was obtained for Snorten-Martin’s arrest, and he was apprehended on September 24.
