A missing person from Lucas County was discovered dead out of state, according to the Lucas County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO).
According to an LCSO statement issued on Wednesday, Brittany Ritter was found dead in Indiana. The circumstances surrounding her death remain unknown at this time.
The Elkhart County homicide unit informed Action News that Ritter was discovered on September 3. Her body was found on top of an open train car.
Ritter was initially thought to be a ‘Jane Doe’ until investigators used fingerprints and tattoos to identify her. An autopsy was performed at Western Michigan University, and the cause of death is still unknown, according to Indiana officials.
The local sheriff’s office issued a missing person poster for Ritter on Tuesday afternoon. The LCSO stated she was last seen in the Holland region between September 1 and September 2.
Her family was unable to contact her and was concerned about her well-being.
According to an LCSO update on September 9, Ritter was found dead, and detectives were working with Elkhart, Indiana, officials on the matter.
“Our thoughts are with Brittany’s family, friends, and all those who knew and cared about her,” the Lucas County Sheriff’s Office wrote in a post. “We recognize the tremendous grief that comes with news like this and extend our deepest sympathy to everyone affected by this heartbreaking loss.”
