More than 8,000 Michigan residents who recently applied for or renewed their driver’s licenses received cards in the mail with the wrong photo.
A statement issued Saturday by the Michigan Secretary of State’s Office said approximately 8,200 people who recently applied for or renewed a driver’s license or state ID had received a “misprinted card.” The office said the misprints were caused by a vendor error and only affected a batch of licenses and IDs printed Aug. 26, 2026.
According to the office, the misprinted licenses and IDs contained a stock photo and stock birth date of Jan. 12, 1967 printed in the lower right-hand corner. The cards did not contain any personal information belonging to Michigan residents.
“The misprinted information is generic and is not the information of another resident,” the office said.
New, corrected cards were sent out, the office said. Anyone who received a misprinted card will automatically get a new one in the mail.
“Affected customers can also go online or visit a Secretary of State branch office in person to print a temporary license/ID to use while they wait for a new card,” the office said. “If your old license or ID hasn’t expired yet, it’s still valid for travel.”
