ICE arrested nearly 2,200 illegal migrants in New York in the last month alone, including convicted murders, rapists, and drug traffickers, and more agents and sweeps are on the way, the feds announced Tuesday.
Between July 27 and August 29, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency apprehended up to 2,197 criminals in the Empire State as part of “Operation Rotten Apple,” which Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin stated was carried out “with no help” from New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani or Gov. Kathy Hochul.
“These arrests included gang members, rapists, murderers, and child predators, and I believe there is a special place in hell for those people,” Mullin told reporters at a press conference.
“Operation Rotten Apple did what sanctuary politicians in New York City and the state of New York refuse to do: made the Empire State safer,” he said in a statement.
When asked by a reporter if he was willing to send more federal officers to New York for roundups, Mullin said, “Absolutely.
“Because they refused to work with us … we will send as many people as we have possible to make sure we are restoring law and order,” he replied.
While praising the operation, Mullin told reporters that the big round-up was necessary because the mayor and governor passed legislation this year that significantly limited local government cooperation with ICE.
Mamdani, meanwhile, “is extremely out of touch with what the American people want and what public safety actually looks like,” Mullin said.
“These are individuals that we took off the streets of New York to protect the people here because you have a mayor here that refuses to work.”
According to DHS, among those seized was Bogdan Detrovich Gren, a Ukrainian national living in the United States illegally who has been convicted of murder, kidnapping, abduction resulting in death, and criminal possession of a firearm.
Andreas Bernal Chiquito, an illegal migrant from Colombia who was apprehended, has a history of sexual assault on children and hurting children under the age of 17.
The FBI also detained Palvinder Singh, an illegal migrant from India convicted of rape in Germany, and Carlos Mendez-Acosta, a Venezuelan migrant convicted of rape.
Mamdani issued an executive order shortly after taking office in January, bolstering sanctuary policies against what he called “abusive immigration enforcement” by the Trump administration.
The move drastically restricts local agencies and law enforcement from collaborating with ICE to apprehend and detain many unlawful aliens.
Hizzoner has since approved new legislation, making it more difficult for local law enforcement to collaborate with President Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigration.
Hochul also successfully lobbied for legislation prohibiting state police from collaborating with federal immigration officials to apprehend people and blocking ICE agents from most public areas, including hospitals and parks.
According to DHS, such “radical sanctuary policies” have resulted in over 13,000 criminal aliens returning to New York streets.
“Democratic politicians in New York and elsewhere say they care about public safety, but they refuse to allow immigration law enforcement officers into their jails to arrest criminals; instead, they release them onto the streets,” said Trump administration border czar Tom Homan in a statement.
Mullin said the federal government should not provide any money to New York until it complies with immigration authorities. President Trump stated that he is looking into options.
“I do not believe we should provide any federal funds to sanctuary states or communities. And I know President Trump is considering possibilities there. In my perspective, taxpayer resources from the great people of Oklahoma or any other red state should not be used to fund a state that celebrates these criminals, such as New York,” Mullin stated.
