A man was taken into custody Sunday in connection with a stabbing on the Five Star Trail near Hempfield, according to state police.
According to court documents, the stabbing resulted from a fight between three persons living in two tents in a forested location off the trail. The injured man told authorities that about 9 a.m., he approached the other tent, which was occupied by a man and a woman, since his own tent was being disturbed.
During a confrontation outside the tents, Chase A. Horton, 23, stabbed the victim on the left side, according to court papers.
Horton told authorities that he was hit in the face multiple times during the struggle, and that the stabbing occurred while Horton was in a headlock. The incident occurred just outside Greensburg, in a forested area along Clark Street and the trail.
Clark Street, off East Pittsburgh Street, runs parallel to the route near the quarter and half mile markers.
According to authorities, the wounded man was brought to a hospital. Horton, who has a Mt. Pleasant Borough address on court documents, was charged with aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, and other counts. He was being jailed in the Westmoreland County Prison on a $25,000 bail.
He did not have an attorney listed in the online court records. The preliminary hearing is slated for August 5.
