H-E-B customer buys winning $20M Texas Lottery ticket

It’s not the same as grabbing the final packet of butter tortillas, but it’ll do. A New Braunfels homeowner and H-E-B customer just won the top prize of the Texas Lottery’s $20 Million Supreme scratch-off game. That is not something you would normally include on your grocery list.

The fourth and final top prize-winning ticket was purchased at H-E-B, 2965 I-35 North in New Braunfels, and was claimed last week. The claimant wishes to remain anonymous, which is understandable. My initial reaction was, ‘Wow!’ ” After I scratched the ticket, I kept looking at it to make sure the numbers were correct,” the winner informed Texas Lottery. “I must have checked it a dozen times.”

While H-E-B parking lots are sometimes hectic warzones of honking and automobiles driving in and out, in this case, it’s likely that the lucky lotto winner scratched out the ticket and understood their life would change. They were probably unconcerned about any traffic along the way.

The $100-per-ticket scratch-off, which debuted in 2022, pays out four $20 million grand prizes. The first was claimed in 2022 in La Feria, Texas, and two more were claimed within a few days in 2023, first in Boerne and then in Fort Worth. So it’s been more than three years since the fourth and last top prize was won.

For its part, the New Braunfels H-E-B may receive more than $100 for the ticket, as selling the ticket may qualify the retailer for a $10,000 bonus under the Texas Lottery’s Retailer Bonus Program.

According to the Texas Lottery, there are roughly 10,379,010 tickets in the $20 Million Supreme drawing, with a total prize pool of more than $829 million. However, given the top four have already been eliminated, the race is expected to end soon. At the time, there looked to be a handful of second prize payouts of $100,000 left, as well as almost 50 worth $10,000.
