A native of Nigeria has been apprehended in connection with two shoplifting incidents at the Target in Wildwood.
Obinna Kalu Kalu, 30, who lives at The Mark apartments in Wildwood, was arrested on Sunday afternoon by Wildwood Police Department officers after being stopped by the store’s asset protection manager.
According to the arrest records, Kalu was observed on security cameras at a self-checkout lane committing “ticket switch fraud.” Kalu used a pack of chewing gum to conceal the barcodes of other items, scanning the gum repeatedly while carrying two Goodfellow T-shirts, Colgate toothpaste, and a toothbrush. The unpaid merchandise was worth roughly $60.
While Kalu was detained at the store’s asset protection office, employees analyzed previous security footage and learned he had used the identical tactic on June 28. During that instance, Kalu was seen on camera scanning a bag of gum while purposefully failing to scan two boxes of Hanes underwear worth $51.
After being read his Miranda rights, Kalu admitted to the thefts. He continuously apologized to the police, claiming that he had made a stupid judgment and was only seeking to collect necessary supplies.
He was arrested for two charges of second-degree petit theft and lodged into the Sumter County Detention Center. He was released after paying a $1,000 bond.
