San Diego authorities have identified the woman discovered deceased in the Pacific Ocean last week as a former San Diego athlete.
The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office said that Summer Nash, 34, was discovered floating in the ocean on June 18 near the 5000 block of Newport Avenue, close to the Ocean Beach Pier.
Lifeguards rescued her from the water at 3 p.m., but she was pronounced dead on the site.
Nash was a top athlete and coach. She attended San Diego State and Florida International University, where she played volleyball.
Throughout her sporting career, she coached various teams, including the Tamarack Beach Volleyball Club, Torrey Pines High School, Mira Costa College, San Diego State University, and WAVE Beach Volleyball Club. She was also an assistant coach for Stanford’s beach volleyball program.
Nash’s previous coach, Coach Deitre, paid tribute on Instagram, stating she is “heartbroken to learn of the passing of my former player.” She added, “My heart aches for her family, friends, teammates, and everyone whose lives she touched. “There are no words to express such a loss.”
The San Diego Police Department is investigating the cause of her death.
