LMPD data highlights ongoing issues at several national storage companies operating in the city.
Multiple residents reported being victims of a string of thefts at a Louisville storage facility.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – When Chanasha Malone rented a unit at Store Space Self-Storage a few years ago, she believed her belongings would be secure.
That wasn’t the case.
“It was open like that,” Malone said, holding the door slightly off the ground. She discovered her unit had been broken into and ransacked on Wednesday.
“That ain’t even mine,” she said, pointing to fishing poles left behind. “Somebody done put that in there.”
While some large items remained, most of the belongings she wanted to protect were gone. Malone lost a washer and dryer, dinnerware, and several storage bins.
“I had everything stacked up, like my whole life was in there,” Malone said. “I have nothing.”
Her unit was not the only one affected.
Hallways were filled with scattered clothes and trash. Cut and sawed-off locks lay on the floor outside multiple units.
Michael Smith’s unit was also targeted.
“It was in order and everything, and there was more stuff in here,” he said. “Now you can’t even walk in here.”
Adding to their frustration, neither Malone nor Smith said they were notified about the thefts before discovering the damage themselves.
Both said their biggest concern is not the lack of cameras, but the lack of communication.
“If a police officer has known what’s going on at this storage facility, why haven’t we? We putting out money in here and he’s really not caring that we’re putting our money into this,“ Malone said. ”And [Company Vice President Robert Barge] totally disregarded you and your question because he know this is f’d up.“
Issues involving large storage companies in Louisville have been reported multiple times.
LMPD crime data shows the scope of the problem.
Public Storage, based in Florida, recorded 53 thefts or burglaries across 22 Louisville locations in 2025, down from 73 in 2024. Despite repeated attempts over the past two years, the company has not responded to requests for comment.
Utah-based Extra Space Storage reported 45 thefts across 15 locations last year.
Store Space, also headquartered in Florida, recorded the highest number, with 74 reported thefts at its two Louisville locations. However, its Jeffersontown site reported no thefts in 2025.
Robert Barge, listed as the company’s vice president, briefly spoke by phone. He praised LMPD’s efforts but did not address questions about why customers were not notified.
“Not going to make any further comments,” Barge said. “I am just going to say we are very proud of the police department and the job they are doing. They have helped us tremendously.”
LMPD confirmed three arrests connected to thefts at the Store Space location on Broadway.
The investigation remains ongoing, and officials are urging renters to check their units and report any issues.
Some victims are warning others to avoid similar losses.
“Don’t rent here,” Malone said. “Get your money, get your stuff, and get out.”
