Louisville man arrested in connection with deadly March hit-and-run
A man was arrested April 7 in connection with a March hit-and-run that left one person dead, according to Louisville Metro Police.
Johnny Merriweather, 67, of Louisville, pleaded not guilty on April 8 to leaving the scene of an accident and failing to render aid in a case involving death or serious physical injury. The court set a $10,000 cash bond, with the option of home incarceration in place of payment. He is also prohibited from operating a motor vehicle.
He is currently being held at the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections, according to online jail records.
LMPD officers responded around 8:37 p.m. on March 27 to a report of a pedestrian struck near Southern Parkway and West Evelyn Avenue, spokesperson Adam Sears said. When officers arrived, they found a man unconscious in the roadway.
Emergency crews transported the man to UofL Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Sears said an “unknown vehicle” struck the victim and fled before officers arrived.
According to the arrest citation, a witness described the vehicle as “an older model white pickup truck.” Investigators reviewed surveillance footage showing the vehicle traveling from Oakdale Avenue onto Southern Parkway near the crash site and used Flock cameras to identify the license plate.
Officers went to the registered address and observed “front end damage” on a Ford pickup truck consistent with a pedestrian strike, the citation states. Merriweather reportedly told police he believed “he struck something” on the night of the crash.
Merriweather is scheduled to appear in court again on April 16.
