HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) — Major updates are coming to Kentucky’s WIC program.

During March, Kentucky WIC food packages will be revised to meet new requirements from the United States Department of Agriculture. Health officials say recipients will gain more flexibility in product sizes at stores, along with expanded options for whole grains and infant fruits and vegetables. New items available include canned fish for women and children, whole grain breads, bagels, buns, English muffins, rolls, and additional cereal choices.

However, some items will be removed because they no longer meet updated nutrition guidelines. This includes certain yogurts, breads, and cereals that exceed the USDA’s new sugar limits. There will also be adjustments to food quantities. Juice amounts will decrease to 64 ounces, whole grains will be limited to 48 ounces for most women and 24 ounces for children, and some packages will include one less pound of cheese.

New package options will also be introduced, including the ability to substitute $3 in cash value benefits for juice, swap beans and peanut butter for eggs, and choose two quarts of yogurt instead of milk.

Officials say the updated approved food list will be available in the WIC Shopper App in April.
