Districts moving to nontraditional instruction

Two Kentucky school districts — Spencer County Schools and Frankfort Independent Schools — have shifted to nontraditional instruction due to high levels of illness among students and staff.

Spencer County Schools

  • Nontraditional instruction days: Feb. 19–20

  • In-person activities will only be available at Tiger Cub Village, the district’s early childhood education center.

  • Superintendent Willie Foster said the decision was made in response to widespread illness.

Frankfort Independent Schools

  • Facilities closed beginning Feb. 18 and continuing through the rest of the week.

  • District officials described the number of illnesses among students and staff as “overwhelming.”

  • In a statement, the district said attendance had “suffered severely” and emphasized that student health and safety is their top priority.

Health guidance

Officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend several steps to prevent illness, including:

  • Getting a flu vaccine

  • Washing hands frequently with soap and water

  • Covering coughs and sneezes

  • Avoiding close contact with people who are sick
