As icy temperatures continue with no immediate relief in sight, Louisville Gas and Electric and Kentucky Utilities are asking customers to reduce their energy consumption.

LG&E and KU serve 77 counties across Kentucky, including parts of northern Christian County.

Shannon Montgomery, vice president of customer services for LG&E and KU, said that because heating systems are working overtime, customers are being encouraged to conserve energy to help ease strain on the regional power grid.

The utilities recommend the following energy-saving steps:

Turn off unnecessary lights and appliances.
Set thermostats to the lowest comfortable temperature.
Limit the use of additional heating sources.
Wear extra layers and use additional blankets on beds.
Keep fireplace dampers closed.
Use draft stoppers on windows and doors.
Run dishwashers, dryers, and washing machines only with full loads.
Open curtains or blinds during the day to let in sunlight, then close them at night to retain heat.
Make sure air registers are not blocked.
Use a microwave, slow cooker, or prepare cold meals, as microwaves use less than half the energy of a conventional oven.
