KENTUCKY — A significant winter storm moving across Kentucky has prompted many school districts, colleges, and universities to cancel in-person classes and adjust schedules for Monday, January 26, 2026, due to dangerous travel conditions, heavy snow, and ice across much of the state.
In Louisville and nearby areas, Jefferson County Public Schools, the state’s largest district, announced traditional snow days for both Monday and Tuesday. This means there will be no in-person instruction or online classes on either day. All extracurricular activities and athletic events have also been canceled.
Several Archdiocese of Louisville Catholic Schools will remain closed Monday because of the storm’s effects. In Lexington, Fayette County Public Schools declared a Nontraditional Instruction day, allowing students to complete assignments remotely from home.
In Warren County and Bowling Green, Warren County Public Schools will observe a traditional snow day Monday, with NTI days planned later in the week. Bowling Green Independent Schools will hold NTI days on both Monday and Tuesday.
School districts across other parts of the state are also modifying schedules. Muhlenberg County Public Schools will remain closed through Wednesday. Colleges in the region, including Bellarmine University, have canceled classes for Monday due to winter weather.
Higher education institutions statewide are also affected. Western Kentucky University has canceled classes and closed its campuses for both Monday and Tuesday, while the University of Kentucky announced the cancellation of all in-person classes on Monday because of inclement weather.
At Fort Campbell, Department of Defense Education Activity schools will be closed Monday due to icy roads and extreme cold, and all after-school activities have been canceled.
Officials continue to encourage families to check directly with their local school districts for the most up-to-date information, as changing weather conditions and travel concerns may lead to additional schedule changes later in the week.
