With just over an hour left before the new year began, a Kentucky woman lost her life. Mayra Alejandra Rodríguez Muñoz was killed in Louisville’s final homicide of 2025 at a McDonald’s on East Market Street. Shoshanha Jones was sitting inside her car in the parking lot when a child reportedly opened a nearby vehicle door and struck Jones’ car. Police say the incident angered Jones, who began yelling at the child.
The situation escalated quickly. Muñoz, who was inside one of the vehicles involved, attempted to intervene. Authorities have not specified which vehicle she was in. That intervention turned deadly. Jones now faces murder charges as Muñoz’s family mourns her loss.
According to WDRB, the confrontation began after the child hit Jones’ car door. Court documents state that the child’s mother, Lorainne Peña Bolaño, tried to redirect Jones’ anger toward herself while remaining inside the car. Jones allegedly displayed a firearm, prompting Muñoz, a Navy veteran, to step out of the vehicle to protect the mother and child. She was shot once in the chest and died from her injuries. Police say Bolaño attempted to record the incident on her phone, but Jones allegedly took the device and fled the scene.
Investigators later identified Jones as a suspect after locating her identification near the scene, WDRB reported. Authorities also said Jones, a convicted felon, was unlawfully in possession of a firearm at the time of the shooting.
Juanisha Saunders, whose close friend manages the McDonald’s, told WLKY that the shooting deeply affected employees and witnesses.
“She went to go check on them and had to see somebody’s baby laying there,” Saunders said. “Not everybody’s built to see death. Not everybody’s built for that type of life. She is traumatized. The workers are traumatized.”
During a court appearance, Jones’ attorney, Keith Kamenish, said police had not released all the details surrounding the incident.
“These are young adults that are going to be hitting 18 pretty soon, and they were approaching her, all three at the time of the shooting,” he told WAVE. “It’s one shot, okay? And she was there for a lawful purpose, eating her food when these people came out and the incident began.”
Kamenish also noted that Jones has several children. A judge set her bond at $500,000 and barred her from contacting any McDonald’s locations or the families involved in the case.
A GoFundMe page describes Muñoz as a proud Navy veteran who served her country honorably through multiple deployments.
“Mayra carried herself with strength, compassion, and an infectious smile, even while bearing invisible wounds,” the page states. “After her service, she continued to live with courage and selflessness, always putting others before herself. In a final act of heroism, Mayra was tragically killed while trying to save a life.”
The incident has renewed questions about the cost of violence, as one moment of anger ended with a life lost.
