A bond hearing and a status conference in the murder case against former Letcher County Sheriff Shawn Mickey Stines ended abruptly Thursday without testimony or legal arguments after Judge Christopher Cohron announced a delay.

“Before we move forward, due to the nature of the case, we want to make sure it’s done correctly and handled appropriately,” Judge Cohron said.

Cohron did not provide details about the delay but said the court will reschedule the hearing to address all pending motions.

Authorities arrested and charged Stines with shooting and killing District Court Judge Kevin Mullins in September 2024. Surveillance cameras inside the judge’s chambers captured the incident.

The motive for the shooting remains unclear. However, Stines’s attorney said their client was and remains mentally ill.
