KENTUCKY (FOX 56) — Snowflakes will soon return to the Commonwealth, and Kentucky State Police troopers are reminding drivers how to stay safe when winter weather hits.

“While we encourage everyone to stay off the roads during hazardous winter weather, we know travel isn’t always avoidable,” Kentucky State Police wrote.

If you must drive, it’s essential to prepare for the unexpected.

“In your vehicle, there are a few items we recommend you have,” Trooper Corey King said. “Some of those items include blankets, sock caps, gloves, and layers of clothing. That’s very important, especially when temperatures drop below freezing.”

Other essentials include:

• Water and snacks in case help takes longer to arrive
• Jumper cables
• Flashlight
• Hand warmers
• First aid kit
• Kitty litter for traction
• Emergency triangles for visibility
• Phone charger or power bank
• Ice scraper
• Blanket

“Take it slow, buckle up, be patient, and please put down the phone,” he said. “Drive safe, Kentucky. We want to make sure everyone makes it home safe,” King said.

“The best emergency kit is the one you never have to use. Travel safely and keep up with your vehicle’s maintenance schedule,” Be Ready Lexington wrote. “Check your kit regularly – perhaps in the spring and fall when you reset your clocks and change your smoke detector batteries.”
