A mother and her son are facing several felony charges after Louisville Metro Police (LMPD) shut down what they called a major stolen car ring on Tuesday.
During a live interview on WHAS11, Chief Paul Humphrey said the Sixth Division recovered five vehicles tied to the case.
Police identified the suspects as 18-year-old Marc Hernandez and his mother, 43-year-old Crystal Meredith.
According to an arrest citation, Hernandez and at least three co-defendants stole several vehicles from multiple victims between Nov. 9 and Nov. 17.
Police said at least one vehicle was taken from a woman’s home in another county.
Detectives learned that Hernandez often brought the stolen cars to his mother’s home.
According to LMPD, Meredith would follow the stolen vehicles as they were moved to other locations.
The citation said she would then drive her son and the other suspects back to her home.
Detectives reported seeing multiple stolen vehicles at Meredith’s residence.
Hernandez faces four counts of complicity to theft by unlawful taking or disposition auto ($10,000 < $1,000,000), complicity to receiving stolen property ($10,000 or more), complicity to engaging in organized crime, and no operator’s license.
Meredith is charged with five counts of complicity to theft by unlawful taking or disposition auto ($10,000 < $1,000,000), two counts of complicity to receiving stolen property ($10,000 or more), and complicity to engaging in organized crime.
Both appeared in court for arraignment on Wednesday.
A judge set Hernandez’s bond at $50,000 and Meredith’s bond at $25,000.
According to LMPD, Meredith was previously charged in another stolen car case involving her son in June. She pleaded guilty to third-degree fleeing or evading police for helping her son and others escape officers.
