Social media erupted in laughter and disbelief after Kentucky Secretary of State Michael Adams posted a reminder telling residents they couldn’t vote in New York or Virginia elections — because Kentucky has no elections in 2025.

“We’re getting calls about polls being closed,” Adams wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “They are closed because we do not have elections today. Kentucky votes next year. You cannot vote today in Kentucky for the mayor of New York City or the Governor of Virginia. Sorry.”

The post quickly went viral, prompting both humor and concern about the state of civic awareness. Adams followed up with another post, saying,

“Have I mentioned my repeated call for civic education?”

While New York, Virginia, and New Jersey held major races on Tuesday, including gubernatorial and mayoral elections, Kentucky does not have any statewide races scheduled this year. The Bluegrass State’s next high-profile elections will occur in 2026 during the midterms.

Online users were quick to react. Some mocked the confusion among voters, while others agreed with Adams’ call for more civic education.

“This is like a sheriff reminding residents not to shoot into tornados because their neighbors might be in there,” one X user joked.

“Best post so far today,” Fox News anchor Shannon Bream commented.

“Who says we don’t need civics education in this country?” wrote Washington Post political correspondent Karen Tumulty.

Despite the humorous tone, Adams’ post highlights a deeper concern — widespread confusion about how elections work and when states hold them.

As one user summed up,

“Look, I’m not saying we need to make it harder to vote. But sometimes, I worry about the electorate.”

Meanwhile, Adams confirmed in a follow-up quip that “no polling place issues in Kentucky” had been reported — since, of course, no polls were open.
