LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A former Trimble County sheriff has been arrested and charged with first-degree sexual abuse after allegedly assaulting a woman while on duty and in uniform earlier this year, according to court records.
Charles Kelton, 53, surrendered to authorities at the Oldham County Jail on Saturday, Nov. 1, following the issuance of an arrest warrant. The alleged assault occurred on Feb. 21, 2025, inside the Trimble County Attorney’s Office.
Incident Happened While Kelton Was in Uniform
Investigators said Kelton, while serving as sheriff, allegedly grabbed a woman’s hips and pulled her toward him after she “physically and verbally rejected him.” The report notes the encounter took place inside her office while Kelton was wearing his official sheriff’s uniform.
According to the arrest warrant, Kelton later admitted to his actions during questioning. He now faces felony sexual abuse and official misconduct charges, the latter tied to misuse of authority while in office.

After turning himself in, Kelton was booked into the Oldham County Jail and released on a $5,000 surety bond. He has been placed on home incarceration and ordered to avoid contact with the alleged victim until trial. Kelton retired as Trimble County Sheriff on July 31, 2025, several months after the alleged incident. The Kentucky State Police and county prosecutors are leading the investigation, which remains ongoing.
