A Kentucky couple won $50,000 from a free Powerball ticket they received through a lottery promotion — discovering their prize two weeks after the Oct. 4 drawing, when the woman returned home from a trip to Europe.
According to the Kentucky Lottery, the ticket came from its “First Friday Promotion,” which gives players a free $2 Powerball Quick Pick on the first Friday of September, October, and November. To qualify, players must spend $10 or more on Mega Millions in a single transaction during the promotional period.
The couple has been loyal lottery players for years, spending about $15 each week on tickets. The woman usually buys their Powerball and Mega Millions entries at the Thornton’s on Preston Highway in Louisville, using a play slip to choose their own numbers for a total of $28, then selecting a scratch-off with the remaining $2.
When she realized they had won, the woman immediately called her boyfriend — who initially thought “it was a joke.” “I was skeptical,” he admitted.
After taxes, the couple received a $36,000 check. The woman said she plans to pay off her mortgage and donate to her church with the winnings.
Thornton’s will receive $500 for selling the winning ticket.
