WILLISTON, Fla. (WSMV/WCJB) — A small plane that took off from an airport in Springfield, Kentucky, crashed in Levy County, Florida over the weekend, killing three people.

Emergency crews responded to the crash, which occurred in a peanut field owned by Fugate Farms. Both the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating.

According to FlightAware, the plane was a twin-engine Beechcraft Baron 58P registered to a company in St. Petersburg. The aircraft was scheduled to land at Williston Airport, but instead of slowing on approach, it increased speed and dropped suddenly.

The airport reported a thunderstorm in the area at the time of the crash.
