Kentucky State Police (KSP) are alerting the public to a scam in which criminals pose as funeral home representatives via text messages.

Victims have reported receiving unsolicited texts claiming to be from a real funeral home employee, demanding immediate payment for services.

“These messages are fraudulent,” the KSP said. “Funeral homes do not request or process payments through text messaging. Scammers are using fear and sensitive circumstances to pressure individuals into sending money or disclosing financial information.”

KSP urges residents to share this warning with family, friends, and especially older community members, who may be more vulnerable.

To protect yourself, KSP recommends:

  • Do not respond to unexpected texts requesting payment.

  • Contact the funeral home directly using a verified phone number if you receive a suspicious message.

  • Never share personal or financial information over text with unknown numbers.

  • Report suspicious messages to local law enforcement or the Office of Kentucky Attorney General – Consumer Protection at 502-696-5389 or 888-432-9257.
