2 people charged with murder of high school senior, Chicago police say

Two people were charged with the murder of a high school senior who was shot and killed in Chicago’s North Austin neighborhood earlier this year, police said.

Melissa Castrejon, 17, was tragically shot on Jan. 21 at West Bloomingdale Avenue and North Latrobe Avenue. Family members previously told NBC Chicago that two shooters on the street opened fire on Melissa, her cousin, and three friends.

The Chicago Police Department’s Area 5 Homicide Support Team arrested Christopher Vazquez, 19, and David Morocho, 18, on Friday.

They were charged with the following offenses:

  • Felony – Murder – First degree
  • Four felony counts – Attempted murder – First degree
  • Four felony counts – Aggravated discharge of a firearm – VEH/SCH
  • Four felony counts – Aggravated assault/shine laser/flasher
  • One felony count – Aggravated UPW/Person/Loaded/No FOID

A detention hearing for both suspects was scheduled on Saturday.
