A 19-year-old Indiana woman faces multiple felony charges after she allegedly blocked a school bus carrying 37 children, boarded the vehicle while armed with a handgun, and threatened the driver. Jamiya Sutton stands accused of criminal confinement while armed with a deadly weapon, criminal confinement where a vehicle is used, pointing a firearm at another, and unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle, according to Marion County court records.
The incident occurred on Sept. 16 on the east side of Indianapolis. Sutton was driving a Kia K4 in the area of East 36th Street and North Dequincy Street when she became convinced that a school bus had pulled out in front of her, causing her to strike a construction sign. Furious, she pursued the bus, and when it failed to stop, she maneuvered her vehicle around it and parked in a manner that prevented the bus from proceeding.
The bus driver stated that she did not notice Sutton until Sutton positioned her car directly in front of the bus, forcing it to halt. Sutton then exited her vehicle carrying a black handgun, brandished the weapon, and demanded that the driver leave the bus. When the driver refused, Sutton “forced the door open and came onto the bus with the handgun,” continuing to yell and wave the firearm before returning to her car and driving away.
Officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department arrived at the scene after responding to a reported crash. Upon arrival, they discovered the Kia obstructing the roadway but determined that no actual collision had occurred between the vehicles. When questioned by officers about whether she had threatened the bus driver, Sutton acknowledged that she was armed but maintained that she “did not do anything with it.”
During the encounter, officers observed loud music playing from Sutton’s vehicle. When an officer reached inside to lower the volume, he located a black Glock 17 handgun beneath the driver’s seat. The weapon contained a magazine loaded with 21 live rounds. Authorities seized the firearm and took Sutton into custody. She remains scheduled for her initial court hearing on Thursday.
