Mass. attorney general’s brother gets life in prison for rapes

A judge on Monday sentenced Alvin Campbell, the brother of Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell, to life in prison for raping multiple women while posing as an Uber driver in Boston.

A jury earlier this month found the 45-year-old guilty of 21 of 22 counts of sex assault. One of the rape counts carried a life sentence, with the chance of parole after 15 years. Even if granted release, Campbell faces more rape charges that would result in 30 to 40 years in jail, followed by another 18 to 20-year term.

According to prosecutors, between 2017 and 2019, he would pick up ladies at the end of the night at numerous Boston places such as TD Garden, The Harp, and Lansdowne Pub. The district attorney stated that the automobile was “festooned with Uber stickers and logos” when it was seized, despite the fact that the driver no longer worked for the carpool firm. The criminal complaint states that Campbell, posing as a rideshare driver or a bar employee, targeted women at downtown Boston venues who were too intoxicated to consent to sex or resist his assaults.

According to investigators, Campbell would then assault the ladies in his car, his own home, or their residences. Campbell recorded photos and videos of the assaults on his phone, which later proved to be crucial evidence in his prosecution.

The defense claimed Campbell had his own transportation firm and contended that the sex was consensual, saying that the victims’ memories were distorted due to alcohol consumption.

Attorney General Andrea Campbell is the state’s top law enforcement authority. Prior to the trial, she expressed her prayers for the survivors. “This is an extremely difficult situation for everyone involved, and I carry that burden with me, including in my prayers for my brother,” she said.
