A former Sweetwater commissioner was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to wire fraud, according to court records.
Sophia Lacayo will also serve three years of supervised release after leaving jail, according to a court decision issued Monday.
According to court documents, Lacayo used various corporations to illegally secure four Paycheck Protection Program loans totaling more than $948,000 after the COVID-19 pandemic hit.
Lacayo resigned from her position in Sweetwater in 2019 after pleading guilty to a perjury charge after authorities claimed she lied about her residence while vying for office.
She is also facing 2023 state campaign-related felony charges stemming from her unsuccessful 2022 bid for a Miami-Dade County Commission seat.
Lacayo was set to surrender to federal authorities on June 10 to begin serving her sentence.
