Cook County man charged after officers find fully automatic gun and unrestrained child in car

A man is facing criminal charges after police found a fully loaded automatic gun during a traffic check in Chicago Heights.

Around 6:30 p.m. on May 5, Cook County Sheriff’s Police officers observed a Dodge Charger speeding and cutting off other drivers on Lincoln Highway.

Tyreek Roach, 24, was recognized as the driver after police stopped the car. Roach had no insurance and agreed to an examination of his car.

Officers discovered a loaded gun with an extended magazine and a switch device that turned the weapon into a fully automatic firearm.

Investigators also discovered a toddler in the rear seat who was not wearing a seat belt, officials said. The child was eventually released to a family friend.

Roach, of Richton Park, was arrested and charged with felony possession of a machine gun. He was also cited for speeding, violating Illinois’ child restraint laws, and driving without insurance.

Following a court appearance on May 6, a judge ordered Roach kept at the Cook County Jail. His next court appearance is set on May 20.
