2 dead after truck crashes into parked tractor-trailer on I-75, troopers say

The Tennessee Highway Patrol reported that a crash in Campbell County near the state line shut down I-75 South for much of Saturday and left two people dead.

According to a preliminary THP report, a GMC pickup truck was traveling south near mile marker 161 Saturday morning when it struck the rear of a tractor-trailer parked on the right shoulder.

THP said the driver, 21-year-old Jesus Eduardo Silva, and his passenger, 20-year-old Denise Andrade, both from Georgia, died from injuries sustained in the crash. Authorities confirmed that no driver was inside the tractor-trailer at the time of the collision.

TDOT’s SmartWay traffic map first reported the crash at 8:42 a.m. Saturday, and authorities shut down the southbound lanes for several hours before reopening them shortly after 3 p.m.

Traffic from I-75 South backed up across the state line into Whitley County and caused major delays on Highway 25W into Jellico.
