LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Jefferson County homeowners must pay their 2025 property taxes by Wednesday, April 15. Officials will transfer unpaid bills to the Jefferson County Clerk for collection after that date.
What You Need To Know
Homeowners in Jefferson County must pay their 2025 property taxes by April 15 to avoid penalties, fees, and 1% monthly interest.
If taxes remain unpaid, a Certificate of Delinquency adds about 40% in extra fees and triggers 12% annual interest.
Homeowners can pay taxes online through the Jefferson County Sheriff’s website or use drop boxes at Sheriff’s Offices across Louisville.
Those struggling to pay can set up a payment plan with the County Attorney’s Office to prevent their tax bill from being sold at a lien sale.
According to the county clerk’s office, once a bill becomes delinquent, penalties, fees, and a 1% monthly interest charge are added. These costs continue to increase each month the bill remains unpaid.
“We understand that many families are juggling a lot right now,” said Jefferson County Clerk David Yates. “No one wants to see penalties add up or risk complications with their property because of a missed deadline. Our goal is to keep homeowners informed and give them every opportunity to avoid unnecessary costs. Paying before April 15 can make a meaningful difference, and our office is here to help anyone who needs assistance or guidance.”
Under Kentucky law, a Certificate of Delinquency adds about 40% in additional fees and interest, while unpaid taxes accrue 12% annual interest. Officials may also refer delinquent accounts to the Jefferson County Attorney’s Office for collection.
Officials warn that many property owners do not realize unpaid bills can be sold to third parties during the clerk’s tax lien sale in July. These buyers may add significant administrative fees, and unresolved liens can eventually lead to foreclosure.
The Jefferson County Attorney’s Office offers payment plans for homeowners who cannot fully pay their tax debt. Homeowners must set up a plan before early July 2026 to prevent their tax bill from being auctioned.
Homeowners can pay taxes online through the Jefferson County Sheriff’s website or drop off payments at any Sheriff’s Office drop box located inside Jefferson County Clerk’s offices throughout Louisville.
