LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Louisville leaders are warning against unsafe behavior along Bardstown Road after a weekend marked by arrests, citations, and traffic disruptions.

“Bardstown Road is a wonderful, safe place for people to come hang out, bring their families, eat food, enjoy our bar scene. Do not stop traffic in the middle of the road,” said Councilman Ben Reno-Weber.

Mayor Craig Greenberg said Louisville Metro Police made about 20 arrests and issued roughly 60 citations over the weekend in the Bardstown Road and Highlands corridor.

Police said many of the citations involved open alcoholic containers in public, public intoxication, and pedestrian violations such as blocking traffic or stepping into the roadway.

A smaller number of arrests were tied to disorderly conduct, street fights, obstructing police, marijuana possession, traffic-related offenses, and DUI.

“People brought cars and three-wheelers. They stopped them in the middle of the road, and they were dancing. No one was threatening anyone, and I do appreciate that, but we don’t stop traffic in Louisville. That is not safe. And it’s not okay,” Reno-Weber said.

Greenberg said officers have been working to strengthen security at gathering spots across the city.

“LMPD is actively working with the detail on nights and weekends, whether it’s Waterfront Park or other places where individuals have congregated in the past. We take that very seriously,” he said.

Concerns about disruptive behavior in the area are not new. After similar incidents last summer, Reno-Weber said police are now taking steps to prevent situations from escalating.

He added that violent crime and traffic units will be deployed this weekend along with additional officers.

“If what you’re going to do is try and stop traffic, drink on the street, what you’re going to see is a lot more of what happened this weekend, which is arrests and citations,” Reno-Weber said.
